The workshop on the topic »News and Photography« was held by James Hill in the grand auditorium of the Rusiian University of Humanitariam Sciences on 19th of December. James Hill is a well-known photographer, shooting for NY Times, Time and european magazines. About 400 people come to listen to James Hill to RGGU.
More than 15 years, James Hill covers events in Russia and the CIS. He tells about his way of seing life in Russia - its people, its problems, its contrasts. James Hill was talking a lot about shooting war, what is important in covering war news. He shared his experience and showed photographs. Pictures from the conflict areas in Afghanistan, Iraq and Chechnya - is not just news, it is people's lives, their tragedy. However, a news photo - is not only war but peaceful events.
In peacetime as at war there are common problems in photojournalism - professional ethics, the elements comprising a photostory, framing, looking for unusual and interesting, interaction with the heroes of the photographs. Sharing pictures and opinions with experienced photographer on those topics is a part of educational process and personal growth for a photographer.
